I don't know if this your family but in the 1900 census in Fauquier County township of Marshal Va. I found this listing

WALDEN, JAMES- head- age 59
------ NANCY- wife age 53
------ ELIZA J. daughter age 18
------- EDWARD-son age 16
------- JAMES H.-son age 14
------- ALBERTA- daughter- age 11
------- NANNIE-daughter-age 8
ROY, MARY- daughter- age 32

I also found them in the 1880 census in the same place, here is how it was listed

WALDEN, JAMES- head age 36
------ NANCY- wife age 31
------- WILLIAM- son age 16
------- HESAKIAH- son age 14
------- MARY E. daughter age 12
------- FRANCIS- daughter- age 8
------- HEDGMAN- daughter- age 6
------- JOHN L. - son age 3
------- DANIEL - son age 4 month

In this census they were all listed as mulatto. Their surname was spell WALDON
