A scholar researching several Winchester families was kind enough to send me an abstract of the 1803-1836 tax lists which list free people of color separately. Families include:
Ball, Barber, Barnett, Besick, Bolton, Bonivill, Britton, Brown, Burwell, Butler, Butter, Buzzard, Carter, Clifton, Cole, Cooly, Crowbar, Cunningham, Dial, Dixon, Ducket, Duland, Dummary, Ellis, Fangrass, Fountain, Frazer, Frea, Gains, Gardner, Garshons, Gartham, Gaskins, Gavins, Gray, Griffin, Hamilton, Hatkin, Hawkins, How, Jackson, James, Jenkins, Johnson, Jones, Jordan, Lafferty, Leonard, Lewkes, Lucus (Daniel), Miller, Mingo, Morgan, Newman, Overton, Prim, Quinn, Randal, Randolph, Ransom, Robinson, Scott, Sims, Simpson, Spence, Smith,Stead, Stephenson, Stewart, Strage (Richard), Tospott, Turner, Walls, Wells, Whealley, Whitsell.
She also traced some of the families to Robert Carter who emancipated his slaves in 1791.
