Re: Henry Watts of Norfolk County, VA
In Response To: Re: Henry Watts of Norfolk County, VA ()
I don't believe any of the WATTS' that are listed in the birth and death registers are the ones you listed, but I will go ahead and post just in case they are related in some way. Please remember that not all births or deaths were recorded. Also there appeared to be no births recorded in this county for anyone for the years 1861, 1862, 1863. VA did not begin to keep birth and death records until 1853, so there would not be a record for MARY WATTS if she died before 1850. There was only 1 WATTs death recorded
HENRY WATTS, c (coloured), m, 28 Sept. 1868, unknown, 3 mos-8days, Benj. & Nancy Watts, Norfolk Co. married, PGI Benj Watts father
In the "race" column the term "free" is used in a large number of entries as opposed to "C". Since most occur after emancipation and whites are identified with W, then it is safe to assume that those who were identified as free are black (and I am including those identified as Mulatto)and this does not refer to their status as "free" or "enslaved".
