I grew up on Loudoun Country and have heard my Mom speak many times of the Poor House. According to her, she visited the Poor House often with her parents when she was small. In fact, it was considered a family outing. Her parents visited a family friend named Woody who lived at the poor house. Woody legs were cut off at the knees and he actually walked on his knees. Mom cannot remember if Woody was a relative or friend, but he was close to the family.
We are African Americans, however, date wise, these visits would have occurred around the late 1920's or even early thirty's.
