It seems to have been fairly acceptable, at least in the more rural areas and smaller towns of the south. During my lifetime I have personally known a number of older ladies in NC who dipped snuff, and not all were from the same family. None of them had ever smoked, although the growing, picking, processing and manufacturing of tobacco was quite common - perhaps smoking was considered a male thing at that time?
