Jan 17, 2005, an article appeared in the Oakland Tribune, "Digging up the Past" West Oakland's early settlers. A Spitton was recovered from an abandoned well at a home of serveral African American porters and their familes. I recall that my Aunt had remarked my GGrand Mother dip snuff in Arkanss. I wondered how accepted that habit was for a woman during the early 1900's.
