Re: Virginia Free Negro Registers
![]() In Response To: Re: Virginia Free Negro Registers ()
Hi Alva. The "special lists" I was referring to were the 1813 personal property tax lists for Virginia. Most county tax commissioners in Virginia made separate lists of the people of color in their districts that year. Many also listed the female members of the household over the age of sixteen (even though women were not taxable). After 1813 most people of color are not listed separately, but they usually have "fn" or "free Mulatto" after their names. The Library of Virginia has a wonderful interlibrary program by which they will lend their microfilm to other libraries--both in Virginia and other states--to any library with a microfilm reader. I get them at my county library here in Pennsylvania. See the link to the library site below. In addition, some counties made a special census of all persons of color in their districts in 1801. Here's a sample from Norfolk County which was included in the personal property tax list for that year at the end of the list: A List of Free Negroes and Mulattoes in my District as Commissioner of the Revenue for the Parishes of Portsmouth and Elizabeth River Heads of Families/ Males/ Females/ Occupation/ Place of Abode Joseph Bass/ - / Naomy, Lydia, Julia, Polly Bass/ - / Deep Creek Henry Aberdeen/ Richard & Henry/ Tempy, Corn, Sophiah & Elizabeth Aberdeen/ Mariner/ Portsmouth Thomas Archer/ - / -/ planter/ Western Branch Joseph Bartlet/ -/ Mary Bartlet/ Tavernkeeper/ Tanners Creek Willis Bass/ Wilson & Willis Bass/ Jemima, Viney, Lovy & Irstellor(?)/ Labourer/ Deep Creek William Bass/ John, Andrw & William Bass/ Lucy & Betsey Bass/ Planter/ Deep Creek James Bass/ John & Willis Bass/ Lott, Lane, Sarah & Lovy Bass/ Labourer/ Deep Creek Thomas Berry/ -/ -/ Labourer/ Gosport Betty Bell/ -/ -/ Oisterwoman/ Western Branch Winney Bell/ -/-/ Labourer/ do Cloe Senr./ -/-/ washerwoman/ Portsmouth Cloe Jnr./ -/-/ do/ do William Cassady/ John Cassady/ Sarah Cassedy, Eliza Gilleat & Renr Scott/ Fisherwoman/ Tanners Creek Isaac Cuffee/-/-/Gardner near Norfolk Ann Duncan/ -/ Betty & Sukey Duncan/ Washerwoman/ Portsmouth William Flora/-/ Gracy Flora/ Pedlar/ do Grace Fisher/ -/ Sally Fisher/ Seamstress/ ditto Joseph Hall/ Geo. In Goochland it's also in the personal property tax lists. In Westmoreland it's among court papers published in the Virginia Genealogist volume 31, pp.40-45. In Botetourt it's in the loose papers of the Court Orders 1800-1804. Janice Abercrombie published the one for Louisa in her book, "Free Blacks of Louisa County, Virginia (Iberian Publishing). The Library of Virginia has one district of Accomack County in 1801 on microfilm.
