Re: Inquiry on the Color Line
In Response To: Inquiry on the Color Line ()

I am a descendant of Edmund Pettiford of North Carolina and my branch of the family migrated from N.C to the midwest Ohio, Indiana and Michigan. They were free people of color many members of my family have passed for white and in my research I have found that many of them are still passing for white. A branch of the family that migrated from N.C to Hawkins ,Tenn still live in Tenn as white Pettifords. I am told that many Pettiford who lived in Michigan also passed for white. My branch lived in Indiana in a settlement called Weaver, about 60 miles from Indianapolis and right outside of a town called Marion.

Another branch of my family is the Burden that is the branch that my great grandmother Martha Weaver Pettiford is from . Her mother was Sarah Burden Weaver. The Burdens were also FPOC and they have almost all have become white. They were very light and they married white or light and eventually they faded into the the white community. The few of them that remained in the African American community are noticable as African American.
