I, too, have a Pettiford in my family tree from Fayetteville, NC. His name was John Pettiford, and his mother was Sarah Council Bogans, and Step-dad was Sam Bogans. I know that we had Pettiford's here in Cumberland County, NC, listed from 1790 and upwards, but I have been unable to figure out which Pettiford's in Cumberland County he was descended. My John would have been born around 1853 or so. He was a Hostler by profession, and was gone from the census by 1900, although I found his name in 1895 listed as a witness to one of his sister's marriages.
