I find your post very interesting. I'm a writer & found out about 10 or so years ago that my family is of mixed race background, "created," if you will, in much the same fashion as you discuss in your note. They come from a long line of mulattos, from way-back-when, in the Opelousas area of Louisiana. Yet my great-grandmother lived as a white woman & no one after her, including probably her daughter, ever knew there was a mix in the family background. I discovered it while searching for hard-to-find info @ the National Archives in DC.
