Re: William Goyens
In Response To: Re: William Goyens ()
Last year I did some fairly extensive research on the Goins/Walden settlement on Pocket Creek, Moore Co., NC, where William Goyens (Goins) was born. He was not a Melungeon, unless you consider any mixed-race Southerner to be a Melungeon. He and his relatives claimed to be of Portuguese descent until the latter part of the 1800's, when they begin to be identified as "Croatan" or simply Indian. Most of the time they seem to have tried to avoid the issue of what their exact origins were, emphesizing their white ancestry when it was necessary to address the issue at all. The Pocket Creek community disintegrated after about 1900, with it's people merging into nearby Black, white, and Indian communities.
