Re: Constructions of race - reading list
In Response To: Constructions of race ()
I said I would post the reading list for my class when I put it together - here's how it looks now: Race, Color & Class in the Americas A comparative anthropological examination of the relationships between social constructions of race and class in the United States, the Caribbean, and Latin America, including the cultural use of variations in skin color and phenotype to define difference and maintain social inequality.
Students will learn the complexities of the racial constructions of mulatto & mestizo, explore the impact of “hypodescent” or “the one drop rule” in the US and compare and contrast the US with three-tiered color-class systems in Latin America and the Caribbean. We will also examine contemporary constructions of bi-racialism, new native identity, and the revival of the mulatto construct.
