Abstract: Former slaves Sampson and Nancy ask permission to take the surname Black for themselves and their children. Sampson was emancipated by Thomas Black in 1816; Nancy, by Anderson White about 1823. Sampson states that he is an "industrious, honest, peaceable, and Quiet Citizen."
