Abstract: A group of Humphreys County residents asks the legislature to grant free people of color Sampson and Nancy the right to use the surname Black and "a right of distribution of property." Sampson, the petitioners state, bought himself and his wife, and the couple had two children -- Wilson and Nancy Ann. The former slaves acquired a "sufficient stock of property" to support themselves and are described by the petitioners as "respectable citizens."
