I suggest you forget the movies and check out a couple of books that would give you a better idea and an overview of conditions during specific time periods for free blacks (and when I say free blacks I am including including folks who may or may not have been identified as mulatto, FPOC, etc). Any number of books have been written over the years........and a number more recently.

Slaves Without Masters by Ira Berlin

Free Blacks in VA by John Russell

The Free Women of Petersburg

more recently Melvin Ely.......Israel on the Appomatox (this is about Prince Edward County in VA)........he also includes a discussion of the literature that has been written over the past several years).

Depending on the state that your relative lived in I suggest you check and see what books have been written. Most can be obtained on inter library loan.

I don't think being a minister in any state made you free.
