Re: Melungeons
In Response To: Re: Melungeons ()

I posted this message in 2003 regarding an article appearing in Discover Magazine regarding voluntary DNA studies done on a number of folks who identify themselves as Melungeons. In my experience it is the "black aspect" of this mixture that causes the most consternation.

Interesting article on Melungeons DNA Study done last year.

Discover Magazine

Where Do We Come Really Come From?
A New Generation of DNA Genealogists Stand Ready to Unearth Our Ancetors. We
May Not Like What We Find by Kathleen McGowan.

"....The DNA data told people who felf a deep connection to American Indians
that their ancestors were mostly white. It informed a lot of blond-haired,
blue eyed people that a least some of their forebears were black.

"...An awful lot of people were hoping for something exotic to be presented
it was not," Darlene Wilson later said. "There were also those who wanted
the African aspect thrown out, and it was not."

Probably good article to read for those of you who are considering the
use of DNA sequencing.
