When did the classification of "Free Negro" end?

Hi all,

I'm a bit confused. The civil war ended at Appomatox in April of 1865...why then is my g-grandfather listed as Free Negro in his marriage record in Loudoun County VA in December of 1865.

Just curious - has anyone else noticed this - and does anyone know exactly when they stopped using this classification? And how the decision was made to re-classify?

I wonder if there were memos written like - "Listen now that those durned slaves and free nigras are really free - y'all have to come up with a new way to keep track of 'em in the records - how many of you want to use N and how may think we should use C?"
(grin)

I see marriage records in Loudoun in 1866 - and folks are just listed as "C".

Denise
