The Bentley family descend from Mary Davis, the white daughter of Richard Davis of London, who married a "Negroe man" named Domingo, according to evidence in the (unsuccessful) suit for freedom brought against Henry Darnall in Anne Arundel County court in 1715 by Rose Davis who was aged 31 at the time.
Rose is listed in the inventory of the Anne Arundel County estate of (the elder) Henry Darnall, deceased, in 1713:
at James Watland's Quarter:
One Mallata woman Rose 29 years old.
At the Woodyard:
One Negro Bently, aged 20
Rose's daughter Polly was the ancestor of the Bentley family which won its freedom in Prince George's County in 1781 based on their descent from Mary Davis.
