Virginia & North Carolina Resources

In need of some resource/research direction in the Bedford Co., Va area, and the Burke/Rowan/Guilford Co., North Carolina areas.

Bedford Co., Va. native (white) becomes pregnant by black man in spring of 1785. The baby born during the winter of '86, may have been born in Bedford, but was probably born in or near Rutherford or Burke Co., North Carolina.

Where can I find?
Chronicle on the free black population 1775-1795 Bedford area
Documents naming free blacks in Bedford area same period
Slave holders of that area during that period
Information on blacks and organizaed religion that area/period
Blacks associated with area Quakers
Rosters of slaves and free blacks

What would have "happened" to a black man slave or free who fathered children by a white woman in colonial Virginia?

Would the woman's social status determine how she or her lover were "treated" by church/government/community? Would a poor white woman have been treated differently than a wealthier woman in the same situation?

Would the woman (teen-aged) have been forced to reveal the father?
