Cohabitation Records VA
In Response To: Re: Cohabitation Records ()
Like the NC Cohabitation List the VA. lists are based on "An act to legalize the Marriages of Colored Persons cohabitating as husband and wife -Passed Feb. 27th 1866 - by the General Assembly of VA." All the Southern states were suppose to collect this information however as with many things not sure if all complied or if all the records still exist(there are numerous requests in Records Gp. 105 of commanders requesting that this information be sent to Headquarters time and time again) It is possible that many do exist but people don't know what they are. The following is taken from a list at the Library of VA. (with the location of the record) Amelia Co. - Freedmen's marriage license book 1865-1869 - LVA
*Don't see Loudon on the list but according to the pre 1904 County Records indes the LVA has Marriage Records nos. 1-4, 1853-1914 1 reel. Probably includes those marriages that occured after the Civil War, but does not include those relationships that preceeded emancipation (I have never looked at so not sure)
