Joseph Mayo left a Henrico County will recorded in October 1785 by which he asked his executors to petition the General Assembly to free his slaves. He had well over 100 slaves in his plantations in Henrico and Mecklenburg counties. They were freed in November 1791. His slaves are listed in the tax lists of Mecklenburg County in the 1780s (see the Mayo family on my site) and also the following for Henrico County:
Joseph Mayo's list, Slaves Scipio, Tom, York, Cuff, Bob, Pope, Rose, Will, Phoebe, Sarah, Judy, Easter, Grace Sukey, Martin, Moll, Patience, Lucy, Scipio, Sezar, Frank, Hannah, Nancy, Arramina, Judy, Betty, Archer, Molly, Tony, Sally, Polly, Homer, Wilcher, Mary, William, Abraham, Peyton, Randolph, Richard Lee, Matthias, Elias, Moses, Elias, Moses, Dread, Lennon, Sezar, Tom, Janey, Savory, Henry, Jamey, Davy, Cupid, Dudder, David, Lucy, Kallister, Tamer, Dilsey, Jamey, Billy, Lucy, Dick, Milley, Frankey, Matt, etc.
A number of the above are listed as heads of household in the 1810 census for Chesterfield, Cumberland, Fluvania, and Powhatan counties.
