Searching Tips Afro-Louisiana Database

Greetings Everyone:

Ancestry's Afro-Louisiana History and Genealogy base as you know is free to everyone. Thanks always to the research, dedication and generosity of Dr. Gwen Midlo Hall.

There are two databases one entitled slave and one entitled free.

The Free database can uncover many mysteries about the origins of Free People of color.

One search tip is plugging "Baptism" into its keyword search. Don't plug in any name.

As a Catholic country of early Louisiana and its environs, the sacramental baptism records often reveal relationships between free people of color and their former masters. Since the Free People of Color intermarried with the same communities of color in Mobile and Pensacola, the information is invaluable. The sacramental records also show the names of many slaves freed at baptism. Lastly they may reveal the names of the slave or free person's godparents.
