NC Designation Colored

Hi. My cousin just informed me that if a death certificate indicated that a person was "COLORED", then that was equivalent to being Native American Indian. My gg-grandmother's death certificate, Bashaby or Bashi Davenport of Pitt County, NC stated that she was colored. It has been hard trying to search for information on her father, Sam Rollins. He is listed as the father on Bashi's marriage certificate. Bashi's mother Rebecca Moore (a white woman, born in 1817) was married to Reuben Davenport. Sam Rollins was also had a child named Susan Barnhill with a woman named Esther Barnhill. Are there any Indian censuses or records that I can search for Sam Rollins? I will appreciate any help or hints. Thanks a lot.
