Transcribed Census 1850...Champaign County, Ohio

Hello All,

A word of caution in reviewing Census records which have been transcribed for digital publication.

These records (types) are of great value and the readibility factor is unbeatable as far as clarity. However, in the translation from the actual Census images errors and/or misreadings are to be considered.

The listing found at the URL below for Champaign County, Ohio, 1850..
Concord Twp., page 318a is a classic example.

The Miles, Adams & Lancaster families found on this page are my ancestors and the inconsistancies are as follows.

Miles....no race listed so assumed to be "white". HOH John Miles was white, but Fanny (wife) and children are persons of color.

Adams....HOH "Lears" is Lewis Adams. This family listing is interesting because it lists all of the children of Lewis and Susan even tho' they weren't in the same household in 1850.

William Adams is also found (1850) in Hancock County, Ohio living with his brother David Adams and his (David's) wife. Malinda Adams, age 30, Lewis and Susan's daughter is also found on this page as the wife of Elias Lancaster and her age is given as 24. These are examples of "double counting" discussed on the Main Forum.

So, as has often been stated here on AfriGeneas the use of multiple records to confirm names, dates & relationships is a MUST in accurately documenting our genealogies.

Art Thomas
