Sometimes there are no indicators or none that you may be aware of. My suggestion is that you play around with it a bit. In other words, if you have found ancestors in the 1870 Census, try their surnames in the 1860 Census. That's how I found out that one of my lines was FPOC. I "knew" that the other FPOC line--PANGBURN--was free because Grammie told me so. I confirmed it by finding them in 1860, 1850, 1940, and 1830.
