I wanted to know if anyone on this list was researching Prince Edward County, VA. I am looking for some information on my gggrandfather in the county and as I was looking through the census I noticed a considerable number of free blacks in the 1850 census. I wanted to know what occurred in the county that caused this phenomenon? I didn't look at the entire census for the county, but every page that I viewed had at least 1 family of free blacks - I looked at a couple of pages that were 3/4 free blacks. Anyway, I wanted to know if there was some landowner that freed his slaves, was the county a central point on a water route that may have had alot of sailors/boatmen that purchased the freedom of their families, what was going on?????
