I didn't take note of a Booker or Washington family in Essex. I was looking mainly for families born free before 1800. You might try getting the Library of Virginia microfilm on interlibrary loan.

For Accomack County the 1804 list has: "Mail Negros or Mulattors:
Toney (by Scarburgh), a ditcher living at Cradk."

The 1799 Personal Property Tax List includes a William who was freed by Scarborough, taxable on one "white" (free) tithe.

I don't see any Baytons in Accomack, but a child named Sinah Clayton is listed as a "Femail" child living near "D.T." in 1804.
