Hi: This is just a suggestion.

1. There were about 16 Goe, Goin,Goines, Going, Gowines,Goings, Goins,Gowins and a Frederick Gowen who are listed in the
"Free Colored" Heads of households in the 1820 North Carolina Census, from various counties in N. Carolina.

2. There was a Fredrick Goen, of Brunswick County, Virgina who served

in the Minority Revolutionary War Service Virginia 1775-1783

and Raverly Going/Gowing, Charles City, Virginia.

Sherard/ Sherwood Going , from Albemarle County, Virginia

and Joshua Gowin from Louisa County, Virginia. They are all

certified as having served in the Revolutionary War.

You may want to look at the various spellings and determine origin and counties, since I suspect that many spellings were misspelled or changed by census takers or the persons themselves over the years. It has been noted by others that some families deliberately changed the spelling to distance themselves from some relatives, they no longer wanted to recognize for various reasons. Many Virginians were relocated or reclocated themselves to Tennessee, Missouri, Iowa and further west for land and opportunities.
