For those who may not have followed my exchange with tb on the Caribbean forum, many of the surnames changed based upon location. I have provided an example my paternal grandfather - Del Rios (proper surname) to Royal (anglicized).
Effectively a goodly number of our ancestors or Creole, creole and British Islanders. It appears they were culturally fluid - having limited regard to race, ethnicity and language. An easy case study is Nova Scotia and surrounding areas (which is part of our ancestry). In addition you may want research forced military service for Irish men - focusing on countries served and abandonment.
Unfortunately, the term "passing" has been over applied - and this is my core hang-up with too many researchers (not directed towards you).
