Re: John Gaeween
In Response To: John Gaeween ()

Unfortunately, we do not have the original record for John Geaween. Instead, there is a transcription from the nineteenth century (by Conway Robinson) which says the name is John Graweere--a name that does not appear again in early Virginia records.

My guess is that the name was originally Geaween, but we will probably never know for sure.

Regardless, we know for sure that Michael and Philip Gowen were free people of African descent who originated in Virginia before 1650 and were probably the ancestors of the mixed-race Gowens that spread throughout the Southeast before 1800.

Ps. I recently updated my Gowens file on my site.
