Pettiford and Anderson family
Here's some speculation about the origins of the Pettiford family:
Lawrence, Lewis and George Pettiford, apparently brothers, born from 1732-1736, appear in the colonial tax lists for Granville County, North Carolina. That's the only place in N.C. and Va. that the Pettiford name appears.
George Anderson did something odd in 1738. He bought 200 acres of land and then a month later took a "Negro servant" named Lawrence Anderson to court to have him bound out as a servant to a white planter. Why would you bind out a child when you've just acquired a farm that needs hands?
This servant fits the description of Lawrence Pettiford. Lawrence's brothers have the same names as George Anderson's other children: Lewis and George.
By his Granville County will, George Anderson left a bed to Lawrence Pettiford's son George Pettiford. Was George Pettiford his grandson?
