Thornton-Carter

I was sprucing up the old family tree last night and reread a record I attached from Loudoun County, Virginia. I found the abstract of the marriage record for Abraham and Eleanor Carter-Thornton, my 4th great grandparents. I took a screen shot and was very excited that I found the abstract. In my excitement, I didn't read the very end of the abstract. It says, "free people of color; Samuel Carter, farther, gives written consent." I totally missed this the first time. It is important because Samuel Carter is my 5th great grandfather. Abraham and Eleanor named one of their 4 sons (they had 9 children) after her father. I did a cursory search for Samuel Carter on FamilySearch.org and used Mr. Heinegg's work. I found a Samuel Carter b. circa 1775 in Cumberland County, Virginia. It is fair distance from Loudoun County. Where should I look next?
