Partial success! I should have looked under Thornton instead Thorton. With the generous kindness of a few Virginia researchers, I was able to pull together a few more tidbits about the family. They were in Sauk County, Wisconsin for the 1860 Census and Abraham the son b. 1844, I believe mustered in as USCT in Illinois. I still have to confirm this but it is start. One the most difficult feats is finding a maiden name of a female ancestor. I believe my 4th great grandmother Eleanor's maiden name was Carter.
