There were free blacks in Illinois, long before 1840, including Du Sable, but there were simply none on the 1830 census for Cook county (Chicago). Free blacks were counted on the 1830 census for Illinois, in the following counties:
Clark, Clinton, Crawford, Edgar, Edwards, Fayette, Franklin, Greene, Hamilton, Jackson, Jo Daviess, Lawrence, Madison, Peoria, Putnam, Pope, Randolph, St. Clair, Union, Vermilion, Washington and White counties.
One could easily take the name of a free black on the 1830 census and search as to whether that individual was on an earlier census in Illinois and I'm sure there are blacks on the earlier censuses, just not for Cook county.
