Re: South Carolina Free Persons of Color

Arlene,
2 yrs have passed since our last conversation. The bad news is that I still have not gotten a hold of a copy of the book you suggested. The good news is that using my great grandfather's death certificate I got the names of his parents and found the family in the 1880 and 1870 census. Here is the 1870

"United States Census, 1870,"
Susan Austin in household of Jubellee Austin (South Carolina, United States)
Name: Susan Austin
Estimated Birth Year: 1842
Gender: Female
Age in 1870: 28y
Color Mulatto
Birthplace: South Carolina
Home in 1870: South Carolina, United States
Household Gender Age
Jubellee Austin (born 1829) M 41y
Susan Austin (born 1842) F 28y
Lewis Austin (born 1857) M 13y
Thisire Austin (born 1862) F 8y
Butler Austin (born 1864) M 6y
Thisire Austin (born 1789) F 81y

The Thisire could be a Kisire. Difficult to read the writing. Jubellee / Juba / Juber is also listed as a blacksmith. His wife Susan's maiden was listed as Cunotas on the death certificate. Jubellee / Juba /Juber also was a landowner in 1870's receiving land from a Thomas Garrett.
