John, if the first African American settlement in what became Chicago, began at any time after 1830 (the link you gave indicates that the first African American settlement was formed in the 1830s) any free blacks would not have been listed on the 1830 census for the area. A look at the link that Art Thomas provided should give the surnames of those free black families in Chicago listed on the 1840 census.
