You might want to take a look at the French courts in the late 1600's early 1700's - the term "les gens de colour libre" was used to define the status of free coloreds who inherited land in Martinique, and what was to become Haiti, and other French colonies - some were educated in France and had weathy patrons. Others held slaves themselves.
