Re: The first Chicago African Americans

There are no blacks on the 1830 census for Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. Other than du Sable who was in Chicago as early as the late 1700s, the first African American community in Chicago appears to have begun in 1840, and was established by free blacks and fugitive slaves.
