DNA tests show that Dempsey Tyner was Caucasian, a descendant of Sarah Tyner and her neighbor, the married John Harris. (His DNA matches that of related Harris families.) We don't know the exact line of descent. It should be noted that a man who lived with a tribe, took part in tribal activities, and had children who married native Americans would quite likely be regarded as a member of the tribe and would call himself Cherokee, even though he had no Cherokee blood.
