Re: Henry County, Virginia
In Response To: Henry County, Virginia ()
I have to admit that I had to go back and dig thru my Henry County material because it has been quite awhile (1992-1995) since I had worked on this county. The material I have was collected either from the "original documents" that I found at the LVA (the old Library - I had to write a letter to the Clerk of the Court in Henry to get permission to look at those), transcribed material sent to me by Pat Ross at the Bassette Library from their "Bicentennial Collection", books, or found in the county court order books (which are on microfilm), and oher sources.
I don't (or could not find) have any Commissioner of the Revenue Lists beginning in 1801. I always make the distinction in my mind between the Lists and Registers because I see them as 2 different documents based on 2 different laws, asking for different information, which compliment each other.
The Magazine of Virginia Genealogy in Volume 37, Nov 1999, No. 4 and Volume 38, Feb. 2000, No. 1, contains a transcription by William Bryd III of a number of the "Lists" produced in the 1850's and one for 1860. The article is entitled "Henry County Register of Free Negroes", at the time I meant to write the editor and make the distinction.
He also included transcriptions of 5 registrations found among "loose papers" which are more typical of the information found in the Register Ledgers. I had also made a copy of one of those when I was working with the original documents.
I do believe that I have some other material from some other counties which you might be interested in. Your question has made me realize that I really do need to ORGANIZE my stuff better.
