Re: Rickman
In Response To: Re: Rickman ()

Hi Doug, I was in Darke County, Ohio, this summer and I walked through the Clemens, and Bass, cemeteries and found no stone for Mathew H Shaeffer/Shaffer, either. I wondered about church records, since the Clemens, brothers were ministers during that time, but, have not checked yet, I don't know if getting that information would even be possible, since it was so long ago. I had a DNA test done through Ancestry.com and 23andme and, I was a match with a man with the last name Sellers, that would support that Sophia Sellers, (WAS) the daughter of Adam Sellers. The guy was very nice when I shared with him the history regarding James and Sophia that is online and in the local history books. I have given up that burning passion that has pushed me to look everyday for something on Mathew Shaffer, I just hope that he did not run off, but, with all those children, that would not seem likely. I did run across a census record for a Mathew Shaffer, about the same age in California, a mulatto, on the 1860 census, born in Ohio, I wondered about him, but, how would he have gotten there, and would he have even done something like that? There were two broken tombstones, laying just behind the fence at the Clemens Cemetery, I could not read anything on them and they were laying behind the fence in a wooded area, I don't know if there were graves back there or just broken stones put there. I did lay my eyes on the Clemens Homestead in Darke County, Ohio and I was very moved, I imagined them there for a brief moment. Sheila
