Just when you think you know where you come from, there is always a discovery that shakes your sense of self once again. While researching the ancestry of my maternal white great-great-great grandfather, William Thoma PEGUES, of Mansfield, Louisiana, I discover that one of his ancestors was a woman named Hannah GIBSON. She married a man named George SAUNDERS in South Carolina in the 1700s. It turns out her brothers were Gideon and Jordan GIBSON, two men of color. Wow.

Goes to show you never know who your ancestors are. One branch of my family descends from fpoc that BECAME White within a few generations. It also exposes the fiction of race and how we are conditioned into believing it's permanence.
