Today it finally worked for me!

The key is to read the search tips and check off the databases that you want to search. Then the trick is that you have to enter a word that is in the database. I just kept trying different words and I kept getting "check off the databases that you are interested in." I kept checking them off and still no luck.

Then I entered "blacksmith" and got lots of hits. So I tried Rappahannock and Maryland and got lots of hits!
