Re: surname White from New Jersey
In Response To: Re: surname White from New Jersey
![]() Hello Paul, Thanks for bringing this book to our attention. Bishop Benjamin Lee of the A.M.E. Church was born 18 Sep 1842 in Gouldtown, Cumberland Co., NJ. Bishop Lee was the son of Abel Lee and Sarah Gould both of whom were also born in Gouldtown, NJ ca 1815-1820. Bishop Lee served as President of Wilberforce Univ. during the early 1900's and he died in the Wilberforce community 12 Mar 1926. He is buried there in the Massie's Creek Cemetery. I wonder if his mother, Sarah Gould, is from the Gould family mentioned in the book. There is a photo of Bishop Lee in the book, on page 18. It would seem with the book's references to the A.M.E. church in Gouldtown, the photo and the 1913 date of publication there would be some connection. Art Thomas Paul wrote:
I love the way the author describes those who passed as white: "so and so moved away and lost his identity."
