Q.: Hi Doug, do you have any idea, what happened to Abner Rickman, I cannot find anything on him anywhere? Is there any information that you know of, that has him listed in Greenville, Darke Co., Ohio with his wife Telitha?

R: Sorry no I don't. He is not with them in Tennessee in 1850 so I am operating on the theory he must have died before 1850 and before the family came to Ohio.

Q: I have two grandfathers that lived in Darke County, Ohio, and the trail just ends. Abner Rickman, and Mathew H. Shaffer, the last time and only time, I see Mathew Shaffer is on the 1850 census record, with his wife Nancy Clemens and their children. I do not find Abner, anywhere.

R: As I stated above I don't believe this Abner RICKMAN ever made it to Darke County, Ohio. As for Matthew H. SHAFFER, again I am operating on the theory that he died sometime between 1850 and 1860. In 1860 his minor children are living in their grandparents' household and Nancy is living alone next door.

Q: Also, I was sent a copy of a WILL, for a James Vicars, he lists Phillace Elam, (the mother of Telitha Elam, who married Abner Rickman) and her two children (free people of color).

R: Yes, I am familiar with this document. I have an electronic copy of the original probated will. As you have stated it raises several questions.
