Just as the last few paragraphs in the article you offered, suggested, they weren't really "free" anyway by pretending to be something else because they were never above suspicion. Passing is about all they did and with today's technology, the truth will eventually unveil that. The actual DNA study indicates that most of the study participants had Ghanian ancestry, so they were African and black. And, Rodney there is value in both. I believe that in denying your ancestry, you are denying your ancestors, and in a large way, yourself. As you said, yourself, in an earlier post on this thread, it is sad.
