There is a wonderful old book by a member of the Gouldtown community, "Gouldtown: A Very Remarkable Settlement of Ancient Date: (1913) by William Steward which you can read on Google Books or get on interlibrary loan.

I love the way the author describes those who passed as white: "so and so moved away and lost his identity."
