Just curious and new to this list. I have our James Bass as a shoe maker in Fairfield Co. Highland Ohio. He came from North Carolina, where he was a boot and shoemaker. Some one said that the area is Quaker, but did not know mixed were with Quakers. Is Longtown close to Fairfield? He went on to Eudora Ks where his wife Sarah died of TB in 1870. Does Ohio have birth records for 1855-1867?

Hello,
Long or Longtown as is commonly referred to is in west central Ohio near the Indiana state line. Fairfield & Highland counties are to the southeast approx. 80-90 miles away.
Long or Longtown is near Fountain City, IN, formerly Newport,IN. In the very early 1800's (1810-1820) Newport was settled by Quakers who came from NC. Among those early Quaker settlers was Levi Coffin, who in SOME circles is acclaimed "President of the UGRR".
Ohio started requiring the counties to record births about 1864, there may be township records in each county with records dating prior to that date. Records at the state level became required in the 1907 time frame.
Hope this answers your questions,
