Re: Free Blacks ~ Kentucky
In Response To: Free Blacks ~ Kentucky ()

Hello Gwen,

Using the Historical Census Browser, Census Records and your Surnames you may possibly be able to find where in Kentucky FPOC communities are located.

The Historical Census Browser (HCB) will give a number of of Free Persons of Color by State and County from 1820-1860. From there you can use the Population Census records for Surnames and Counties in question.

This may be a tedious exercise, but it might be of help for locating your Free Persons of Color in KY 1800-1860 (HCB).
1. Choose Ethnicity/Race/Place of Birth
2. Scroll to & Click (Total Free Colored Persons (1820-1860)
3. Click Submit
4. Check Kentucky & Click Retrieve by County Level

Hope this helps,

"Does anyone know of FPOC communities in KY? I have banged my head against a brick wall for years trying to figure out where in KY my 3rd great grandmother came from. All I know is that she was born in KY in 1818 and moved to Alexandria, LA between 1833-1835 with family members. Her maiden name was Carr."
