I am researching my ancestor Dempsey Tyner or Tiner and his wife Obedience. They may have been related to the Cherokee and White Vann families. Dempsey (b. 1755, Chowan County, North Carolina) may have been an Indian, a freed person, White, or any combination thereof. His father was likely Harris Tyner and the Dempsy family nearby were mixed races. Dempsey Tyner served as a spy and a scout in the Stevens Creek area of South Carolina, near Augusta, Georgia, during the American Revolution. He later worked as an overseer for the Cherokee Chief Joseph Vann and lived in what became Athens, Georgia, and Chattanooga, Tennessee. Any help will be appreciated by a great many people. Robert S.
